December Newsletter

christmastree.gifCan you believe it’s already December? There are only 14 school days in this month and each day is full of fun learning and preparing for the Birth of Jesus.
Check out all 2nd grade events for December by clicking on the calendar link calendarstthomas.gif

Religion – We are continuing our study about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please keep going over the Examination of Conscience and Formula. We will also be learning about Advent and Christmas.

Math – We will be learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes. We will learn to name and draw line segments, make parallel lines, identify quadrangles, and find lines of symmetry in objects. Along with this, we will compare 3-dimensional shapes and construct different types of pyramids. We are still working hard on our Math Facts in a Flash and earning prizes.

Science – We will be studying about living things – plants, animals, and people. I hope to be able to incorporate a trip to my family’s florist to learn more about the plants. We will focus more on animals and people in January.

Social Studies – We will be studying about families and trade, children around the world, and holidays around the world. We practice reading maps daily.

Vocabulary Sentences – Please continue to mark at the top of your child’s vocabulary sentences how much help he/she needed to write the sentences. This really helps me assess their progress in being able to use new and unfamiliar words correctly in sentences.

Reading Log – Thanks for your help in recording how your child is reading each night. Starting Monday, your child will only bring home his/her reading log if he/she has a book in it to read.

Reenactment of the First Christmas – It is a tradition at St. Thomas that the 2nd grade does the final Advent Prayer Service. This prayer service is the Reenactment of the First Christmas. It will be held on Monday, December 20th, at 8:00 am in the cafeteria. Your child will either have a reading part or acting part. They will not need to memorize any parts. This is a beautiful prayer service. I hope you are able to join us.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful 2011!santa.gif
